The global average temperature has risen by 0.85°C since the end of the 19th century. 2019 was the second warmest year on record. This warming seems unstoppable: the years 2015 to 2019 showed the highest average temperatures, and the 2010-2019 decade has been the warmest on record.
The world's leading climate scientists believe that human activities are most likely the main cause of the warming observed since the middle of the 20th century. The use of fossil fuels, tropical forest logging and cattle ranching are releasing huge amounts of greenhouse gases on top of those naturally present in the atmosphere, adding to the greenhouse effect and global warming.
CO2 is the greenhouse gas most produced by human activities. It is responsible for 63% of man-made global warming. Its concentration in the atmosphere is currently 40% higher than at the beginning of the industrial age.
